Read moreYou'll fall in love with WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING, the hit romantic comedy that woke everyone up to adorable Sandra Bullock (SPEED, A TIME TO KILL). As Lucy, a lonely subway worker, she becomes smitten with a handsome stranger (Peter Gallagher -- MALICE). But when she saves his life after he's been mugged and fallen into a coma, his hilariously offbeat family mistakes her for his fiancee! Soon, the mix-ups escalate as Lucy fabricates a life between herself and a man she's never met! And when Lucy falls for his charming brother (Bill Pullman -- INDEPENDENCE DAY) the situation really gets uproarious as she's forced to make a choice between the two!If you don't mind a heavy dose of schmaltz and sentiment, this romantic comedy has a gentle way of seducing you with its charms. While You Were Sleeping was the first starring role for Sandra Bullock after her blockbuster success in Speed. In a role that nicely emphasizes her easygoing appeal, Bullock is the reason the movie works at all. She plays Lucy Eleanor Moderatz, a Chicago Transit tollbooth clerk who's hopelessly smitten with a daily commuter, Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher). She saves the object of her affection from certain death after he's mugged and falls onto the train tracks. While Peter is in a coma, she lets his family believe that she is his fiancée, and surprisingly finds herself drawn to his brother (Bill Pullman), for whom the attraction is definitely mutual. How Lucy gets out of this amorous predicament is what makes this pleasant movie less predictable than its familiar ingredients would initially indicate. It's feel-good fluff, with characters and performances that keep you smiling through the drippy plot mechanics. --Jeff Shannon Read more

Hop is all about achieving one's dreams, regardless of how fantastical those dreams may seem. Hidden deep inside the mouth of a moai statue on Easter Island is a candy factory that produces the world's Easter candy and looks like a cross between Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory and Santa's Workshop. The Easter Bunny and a very bossy chick foreman named Carlos take their responsibility to make Easter happen very seriously. But the Easter Bunny's son E.B. dreams not of taking his rightful place as the next Easter Bunny, but of becoming a famous drummer--a situation that his father finds highly disappointing. In the human world, Fred O'Hare is also a disappointment to his father; he's a young man who can't seem to find a job that he's passionate about--indeed, he's a slacker who can't seem to find any job at all. E.B. and Fred meet on the streets of Hollywood and become unlikely roommates in a borrowed mansion. As the two struggle to find and pursue their dreams, hilarity ensues and each character learns a surprising lesson from the other. Hop is full of comic moments that include a bunny that poops jellybeans, chicks that shout through "eggaphones," and an elite bunny force known as the "pink berets." The premise of the story is a lot like director Tim Hill's earlier Alvin and the Chipmunks films--a man without direction finds his purpose through an unlikely relationship with a cute talking animal after enduring lots of big messes and plenty of silly slapstick humor. The main difference is that in this film, energetic drum solos replace the high-pitched, sped-up singing of little chipmunks. The combined animation and live action is deftly handled by Chris Meledandri's Illumination (Despicable Me). Hop is a film full of silly antics and some good chuckles--it's not deep, but kids ages 7 and older, as well as adults, should enjoy it. --Tami Horiuchi Read more
Tony Jaa, the martial arts master
who is as mesmerizing as ever
(Entertainment Weekly), stars in this epic tale of revenge set hundreds of years in the past. This prequel to Ong-Bak: The Thai Warrior takes Jaa s skills to the next level, showcasing him as a master of a wide range of martial arts styles. THE BEATDOWNS ARE EPIC, with several jaw-dropping set pieces. The climactic scene qualifies as one of the BEST MARTIAL ARTS FIGHT SCENES EVER. (LA Daily News)From the moment the crocodile leaps out of the muddy water, you know you’re in for some dynamic entertainment. What will surprise you is just how sweeping, inventive, and even beautiful this Thai martial arts movie can be. The plot of Ong Bak 2 is basic: A young prince sees his parents murdered by a usurping tyrant. Under the tutelage of a bandit chief, the boy grows up to be an astonishing fighter who sets out to take revenge. (There’s no need to see Ong Bak before seeing this film; the only thing they have in common is their star.) What lifts it above the ordinary are aggressive camera-work, acrobatic action sequences, and moments of dazzling, hypnotic loveliness (such as the Thai dance scene, shot with a stunning visual symmetry that falls somewhere between Busby Berkeley and Stanley Kubrick). And above all, there is Tony Jaa, who stars as the adult prince and co-directed. Jaa is one of those virtuosic physical performers--like Bruce Lee but also like Fred Astaire--who seem to channel some divine energy through human flesh. Not only is he is a peak athlete; he has a vulnerable, soulful charisma, which has nothing to do with acting ability but makes someone supremely watchable on film. Ong Bak 2 is not kitsch or camp; it has the over-the-top romanticism that Western audiences sometimes resist--but if you surrender to it, Ong Bak 2 is a rich, rewarding movie experience. --Bret Fetzer Read more
Tom Shadyac's Film as seen on Oprah
I AM is the story of a successful Hollywood director, Tom Shadyac (Liar Liar, Nutty Professor, Bruce Almighty), who experienced a life threatening head injury, and his ensuing journey to try and answer two very basic questions:
What's wrong with our world? and What can we do about it?
With a film crew of four, Tom visits some of today s great minds, including authors, poets, teachers, religious leaders, and scientists (Howard Zinn, Lynn McTaggart, Desmond Tutu, Thom Harmann, Coleman Barks) searching for the fundamental endemic problem that causes all of the other problems, while simultaneously reflecting on this own life choices of excess, greed and eventual healing.
We started by asking what's wrong with the world, and ended up discovering what's right with it.Ace Ventura director Tom Shadyac takes a sharp left turn in the documentary I Am. After a bike accident that results in cuts, bruises, and a concussion, he sinks into a depression, and considers the state of the world. He wonders why it's in such a mess, and decides it's because of aggressively competitive people like him: Americans who strive to amass wealth at the expense of their well being, their interpersonal relationships, and the environment that sustains them. He illustrates the point with repeated shots of his private jet and extravagant properties, then proceeds to speak with famous figures who emphasize compassion, like sustainability activist David Suzuki, linguistics professor Noam Chomsky, progressive historian Howard Zinn, and environmentally conscious CEO Ray Andersen (star of The Corporation). He also speaks with his father, Richard, who cofounded St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital (Zinn and Shadyac Sr. passed away prior to the film's release). His heart is in the right place, but I Am doesn't quite add up as Shadyac seems to be simultaneously bragging (about his movies and possessions) and beating himself up (about those who have less). His documentary also covers much of the same ground as One Peace at a Time, though that may be purely coincidental. By the end, he downsizes in order to lead a more constructive existence, though it's hard to tell whether this is a permanent shift, an advanced case of midlife crisis, or a holiday from Hollywood until the next potential blockbuster comes along. --Kathleen C.
